Default Skin
#1
I know we have a skin thread but it seems like it has two conversations going on at once, one for customs, the other for the default skin. Let's try to focus the default skin discussions in this thread going forward to collect our thoughts better. Let me summarize the viewpoints already presented with some of the art suggested with my opinion in parentheses to start further discussion:

The default shouldn’t look like Facebook. (I agree.)

Uganda Pikachu! looks like he is our point man for making the default design happen, and Kirby being the other hand in the game. (Cool with me, but we should all agree on the default in the end.)

Lord has stated that he thinks Kirby and Uganda Pikachu! have bitten off more than they can chew. haha (I agree, but I think if we all colab and they fineness with their ideas it should work out well enough.)

Uganda Pikachu! made first banner:

(I actually really like the typography and spacing.)

Celery made a banner.
(I like the direction, don’t like the typography all that much though. Also, I have Trypophobia.)

God offered to “take a shot” at making a default skin OVER THE WEEKEND. (I have faith in him to produce, but again I think we all need to agree.)

Rayne made a comment how no one uses Firefox anymore. God said he still does stating he thought it was still people’s go to choice, Rayne says its still awful. (lol)

Rayne says we should have played nice with the artsy people in the past so they could do this whole thing for us. (Agreed, I still miss CA.)

Pichubro says she might be able to make old PD. (Word)

Khoas recommended not having blue headers. (If it works with the decided overall default theme’s system then cool.)

I suggested that do we want to make the logo to be a bite from FFVII or a new design. Either one done well that we agree on works for me.

Rayne made a post that made me laugh and it is now in my signature.

Celery used Uganda Pikachu!’s first banner with his:

(I think it looks very good, I like both of their ideas. Maybe a less photorealistic background as Celery said?)

Rayne Uganda Pikachu! made a new banner:
(Haha, I mean it is funny but it looks like a Hooters ad or a cheap Pokemorph porn site. All great places of course but is that the true "HB vision?")

God suggested rotating banners like 4chan, others have latter suggested it as well. (I mean I LIKE the changing banners, but I don't think it should be a default option. I think we should focus on a "pure" default HB look, the rest can be custom skins.)

So guys, this isn't going to be an overnight thing but I personally like the directions everyone is heading. If I left out anything regarding just the default skin please add in replies, and let us continue this conversation.

I replaced the background with something different. Thoughts?

that's cute. only complaint is the text is a bit hard to read over the honey combs.

if you have that honey comb background looping at the top, that would look really nice.

Okay okay, what about THIS
[Image: HCRWNTO.png]
Do you mean like, have the combee and the text just be placed over the honeycomb pattern which would act as the background, or something?

yes, that's perfect. if that's implemented, only keep the text and the combed as an image while the honey combs are set to loop horizontally where the banner goes.

Okay, this SHOULD tile seamlessly horizontally

And here is the transparent text Uganda Pikachu made with the combee

This is a honeycomb sprite from Terraria.  It might be good for the forum icons to indicate that there are unread threads in color, and read threads in monochrome

Donkey Kong 2 has a lot of good bee art.

I don't know what other color would really work well though, maybe dark grey? If I make it anything else it kind fucks with the bee theme.

I suppose I could make the background honey color (maybe with a honey comb pattern if we get fancy) with black trim?

It's actually pretty good!  Although I think having a honeycomb for the background would not be easy on the eyes.  I really like the blend of yellows in the posts.  I would suggest trying your hand at replacing the #A98307 in the trim with #000000, and the black background with #BFAE3B and see how you like it

I actually really don't like that color of brown you gave me (its too green for my tastes), I went instead with another brown which I stumbled upon.

As is it looks pretty nice to me actually (with still the honey color trim)

Perhaps I should just give it thick black borders?

Im not sure how to say this without sounding too confusing but I feel the bright yellow is too bright and the dark yellow is too dark. You've got the right idea but the shading could compliment the font colours better.

I've seen amorphous little balls of light bouncing all around in the front yard through the window. I've seen giant bugs on the floor. I was in a hotel room in Amarillo, Texas, and all I remember is standing on the bed and seeing the whole wall in front of me filled with lights that were [makes popping sound] popping like popcorn out of the wall. Then I'll wake up and I go "Wow, I was standing on my bed and staring at this wall."

Edit: not dark yellow, the gold colour could be a lesser tint.

I had this in mind with it, to give it the black and yellow stripe feeling

I actually don't know what you are on about the yellows... lol

I have three yellows: pure yellow at the top, light yellow for the poster info, and VERY light yellow for the content.

The honey color is shit though I will admit.

hmmm that would give it a more "stipey" feel to it, as I said though I can also do that with thick black borders (I haven't even touched the borders yet)

Yeah I was talking about the honey colour, didn't know how to describe it, sorry.

if you want to make the headings look smoother, you can definitely try a gradient too.

^ yes use gradients. and also use patterns like this:

making everything a solid color is a recipe for a mediocre skin

I took out the gradient when I was first making the skins because its a pain in the ass to work with them when you are toying around with shit, as mybb incorporates them as image files that are repeated. I will add in the gradients only at the very end, probably the last thing I do actually.

I changed the trim to black. Idk, it looks a bit clashy to me, maybe it will look better if I add borders.
